NEWBORN'S FIRST PHOTOSHOOT
Congrats! You’re about to welcome your new baby into the world, which means you’ll have your hands full with feeding, bonding, and trying to squeeze some time to sleep and care for yourself too. Planning your newborn photoshoot with your photographer in advance is key. Photographing your new baby for the first time is a big deal, and whether you’re perfectionist planner, or a super chill mama, here are some tips and tricks to minimize stress for baby’s first photoshoot. After photographing hundreds of babies, I’ve accumulated some knowledge that I want to share with you to ensure you get the newborn photoshoot of your dreams.
Newborn Photography Preparation Guide
Share your due date. I like to photograph my newborn within the first 10 days of life. It might seem a bit early, but in my experience, the best time to capture those “snuggly baby” vibes is within that time frame. Since every birth story is different, I’ve reserved some time in my schedule to photograph you and your new addition around your due date. Simply call or text me once baby arrives, and we can figure it out from there. If you need more time to heal, that’s ok too. We can really plan your photoshoot any time, but your baby’s personality will start to develop with each day, so consider this when planning your session.
Keep it clean. Let’s be honest, you’re probably going to be sleep deprived and won’t have much time to clean the house, especially if you already have other munchkins kicking around. If there ever was a time to hire a cleaner, it’s probably within the first month of having a new baby. If you already have a cleaner, arrange for them to clean your home the day before your session. If it’s not within your budget, hide the mess. That’s right, just stash all the clutter away in a closet and keep it out of sight. I like to photograph from all angle, so moving the mess to that corner in the room won’t do.
Let baby call the shots. Trying to do anything else usually fails. Let your baby decide when they are ready to be photographed. If baby is hungry, feed her, is baby needs to be swaddled, go with it. A happy baby means a comfortable baby, which means they will likely go with the flow and maybe even fall asleep during our shoot.
Plan ahead. Have your outfits and accessories all planned out ahead of time, including those for baby and husband too. Lay them out on your bed ahead of time to make sure they go together. The same thing goes for chatting about the photoshoot with baby’s siblings in advance. If they know what yo expect, they will feel prepared and open up!
Have fun with your kids. Kiss them, tickle them, talk to them and interact with them as you normally would when you’re having fun. If they feel comfortable, they will open up, I promise!
WARM WINTER MATERNITY
Congratulation to Paul and Alana who are about to welcome the most precious baby boy into the world. I just love this warm winter maternity photoshoot in Calgary Alberta with Paul and Alana. Loving the contrast between the cool snow and the warm sun beams peeking through the leafless trees, showing off how good Alana looked in the blush maternity dress. Can’t wait to meet your little man soon.

WARM WINDS, SUNSETS AND MATERNITY LACE
I love showing up to a location for a shoot and letting mother nature take care of it all. I loved this session so much, it’s one of my all-time favourites. The warm wind, beautiful sunset and vast fields made this session really easy going and the final product is more than I could ask for. Pair all of the above with one of my “Client Closet” dress rentals and you get this, pure magic!

ROMANTIC EAST COAST WEDDING AT THE NASH RESTAURANT IN CALGARY
I’ve known Mark and Teresa now for almost two year and they are quite possibly the two sweetest East Coasters living in Calgary. First, I was lucky enough to photograph their surprise proposal, and it was just the best because Teresa had no clue, but mostly because Mark planned it out perfectly. Then, I was given the opportunity to photograph their East Coast inspired wedding at the Nash Restaurant in Calgary. Their vibe was quite classic and romantic with a touch of the maritimes to celebrate their eastern roots in Alberta, where they now call home. Congrats to these two sweeties. Can’t wait to photograph them again soon.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN MATERNITY
When I think of adventure, camping, hiking and the mountains, I can’t help but think of Zoe and Kyle and their special relationship with the Rocky Mountains. These two approached me to do a mountain maternity session because they love the great outdoors so much, and their love for the mountains became even more obvious to me after I saw their baby’s first camping trip photos, just three weeks after beautiful Zoe gave birth to their precious daughter. Next up on my list of mountain photoshoots with the Jackons: newborn camping shoot.

WINNIPEG GOLDEN WHEAT FIELDS WEDDING
I've wanted to photograph a bride, or anyone for that matter, in a golden wheat field for as long as I can remember. Maybe it's my Manitoba roots calling me, or the way the sun melts like buttery caramel over the long tall blades of wheat, it's my opinion of the perfect backdrop for any photo session.

CRESCENT HEIGHTS SURPRISE ENGAGEMENT IN YYC
Planning an engagement proposal is not an easy task, but Mark really knocked this one out of the park. Everything was executed perfectly, from the sneaky ring swap to the "accidental discovery" of the view where he proposed, overlooking downtown Calgary, Teresa had no idea it was all happening until Mark got down on one knee. Hands down, the most emotionally charged session I've ever had the pleasure of photographing. Make sure you click through to the end of the slide show to see his proposal and her reaction!

SUNFLOWER MAZE MATERNITY PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION
Well, this is what you get when you combine smoke from the B.C fires, a sunflower maze and these two babes. I had the pleasure of photographing these two once again this week and this time was even more special because we were able to venture out to the sunflower farm in Bowden to capture these beautiful pictures. Hope you enjoy!

BANFF MOUNTAINS SIDE ENGAGEMENT
When Adam and Sarah approached me to photograph their engagement, and said they really wanted a mountain backdrop for their photos, I was so stoked because I’ve been dying to photograph the rockies in the fall. We had our challenges in planning this session, with cool weather and two locations changes due to a bear attack in Kananaskis and a cougar advisory at Wedge Pond, Banff naturally seemed like the appropriate solution. I love the strong contract in tones between the crisp, cool, icy mountains peaks and the warm golden changing of the fall leaves.

LIFESTYLE FAMILY PHOTOS
When your best friends ask you to photograph their family, and you know their little kiddos so well, it really makes getting the job done so much easier. Connecting with kids before your session is essential to making them feel comfortable so they can open up in front of the camera. As a client, booking the same photographer year after year presents a clear advantage in helping your kids achieve this level of comfort and trust with your photographer. In this case, all my friends had to do was tell their kids that “aunty Max” was going to take their photos and snap, we finished our session in no time at all.

WELCOME BABY GIRL
I’ve had the pleasure of photographing this couple three times this last year and every time I think I might have outdone myself in creating beautiful photos for them, they show up to the next shoot looking even better than the last time with the biggest smiles and fullest hearts, and together we create something so special! Beautiful photos are not created solely by the photographer, its also the connection and the mood that the clients convey during their session and how willing they are to open up to the photographer that make translating the emotions on camera a success. Don’t get me wrong, I feel 100% confident directing and guiding my clients during a session to get the right shots and poses, but your photos can only ever be as unique and special as you allow them to be by being yourself and allowing the photographer to capture all your quirks and uniqueness. I think you’ll see what I mean when you see Kelsey and Cort’s new born photos…

I can only imagine, and I will find out soon enough when I deliver my next baby in the next few weeks, how hectic and crazy it can get in a household with a toddler and a bran new baby boy. But Madeline and Justin handled themselves and parenthood like champs. Thank you both for inviting me into your home to photograph your beautiful new baby boy and your light and airy home. NEW BORN LYLA'S FIRST FAMILY PHOTOSHOOT
Booking your newborn’s first photoshoot isn’t always easy, especially if you’ve got a toddler kicking around to spice up the getting ready process! You’ll likely be tired, won’t know what to wear, be rushed in getting ready and feel a little overwhelmed by it all, but let me say this: I’ve never had anyone ever regret it once they receive the final product, I promise!

BANFF MOUNTAINS INSPIRED ENGAGEMENT PHOTOSHOOT
Congrats to my beautiful friend Tallis and her styling fiancé Eric who recently got engaged this spring! Seriously though, how cute are they in their matching hats and denim on denim? The inspiration for this photoshoot was the open air and Canadian Rockies that we are lucky to have in our backyard, here is Calgary, Alberta. Love these two and wish them all the happiness in the world.

BOHO SUNSET, BOHO BUMP
I can’t even tell you how much fun it was to photograph Kelsey and Cort in this bohemian themed maternity shoot. I love how the sun set’s warm colours bounced off the pink and taupe rocks, onto Kelsey’s elegant and flowy dress. Pair all that magic hour with some warm wind and a bohemian hat and the baby bump is complimented perfectly. Hope you guys love this session awn much as I did, it was seriously one of my favourite ones up to date!
