Why Styling Matters More Than Most People Realize
The right clothing helps create a cohesive gallery, complements your location, adds movement and texture, and creates timeless images you'll still love decades from now.
Whether you're planning family photos, maternity pictures, engagement sessions, or an Alberta elopement, thoughtful styling can completely transform the final result.
My 6-Step Styling Process
One of the biggest sources of stress for clients is figuring out what to wear.
Questions start popping up:
What colours work best?
Should we match?
What photographs well?
What should the kids wear?
Do I need to buy a new outfit?
The good news? You don't have to figure it out on your own.
Over the years, I've developed a simple styling process that helps my clients feel confident, comfortable, and fully prepared before their session.
1. Location
Your location helps determine the overall look and feel of your session.
A mountain session often looks beautiful with creams, greens, soft blues, and earthy tones, while the Alberta Badlands pair beautifully with warm neutrals, rusts, taupes, and natural textures.
2. Colour Palette
Rather than matching everyone exactly, I help families coordinate colours that complement both the location and one another.
This creates a more natural, timeless look while still allowing each person's personality to shine through.
3. Texture
Texture adds depth and visual interest to your images.
Flowy fabrics, lace, linen, knits, cotton, suede, and layered pieces help photographs feel more dynamic and create beautiful movement throughout your session.
4. Shape & Movement
Some clothing simply photographs better than others.
Flowing dresses, soft sleeves, layered fabrics, and pieces that move naturally in the wind often create the most flattering and visually striking images.
5. Personal Style
The goal isn't to turn you into someone you're not.
I want you to feel like the best version of yourself while staying true to your own style and personality.
6. Timelessness
I generally recommend avoiding large logos, neon colours, and overly trendy pieces that may quickly date your photographs.
My goal is to help create images you'll still love decades from now.
Every session with Maxine LaGarde Photography includes styling guidance, and for clients who would like additional support, I also offer personalized styling services and access to my growing client closet.

I also offer a growing collection of children's wardrobe pieces designed to coordinate beautifully with family colour palettes.
From dresses for little girls to carefully selected pieces that complement Alberta's landscapes, the children's closet helps create a cohesive look without requiring families to purchase an entirely new wardrobe.
Many parents find this especially helpful when coordinating multiple children for family photos, maternity sessions, and sibling portraits.
“In my opinion, choosing the right clothing for your session is single handedly the most important thing you can do to look your best in your photos.”

One of the most-loved parts of the Maxine LaGarde Photography experience is access to my growing client closet.
